I have Windows Live Messenger and I wanted to know if and how it is different to AIM.

Not a lot, they run on similar but non compatible protocals, all instant messanges around have the same insecurity, the hold a constant connection making it easy to find someones ip address, really it needs to be more like having an email client set up to check for new mail ever 10 seconds or so...
